Question - This focuses on spousal or intimate partner abuse. There are two essay questions and an article review. For essay question one you will need to first read the Michigan Penal Code definition of assault. The second essay question is based on the the NBC Learn video In Cash Strapped Topeka, Domestic Abuse Made Not a Crime that you saw in this module's learning activities.
The format for your article review:
1. In the Michigan Penal Code under the definition of assault, a person who assaults someone who meets certain criteria such as spouse, former spouse etc. is subject to enhanced penalties even if the victim is not the same person on subsequent assaults. Conversely, a person who assaults another that does not meet the criteria is subject to the same penalty each time, even though the victim could be the same person for subsequent assaults. How do you account for the enhanced penalties? Do you agree or disagree with these enhanced penalties?
2. An assault, whether domestic or not, is considered a relatively minor crime for a first offense. Why was it such an issue in Topeka when the county district attorney said it was too expensive to prosecute these crimes?
3. Construct an article review of Risk Factors for Death of Life-Threatening Injury for Abused Women in Chicago.
4. Write a summary of the article. In the summary describe the purpose of the article, how the research was conducted, and the results.
5. What are the meanings and implications of the results of the study, you can offer your opinion in this section of the review
6. How could the author expand on the results, what should future research in this subject matter focus on?
7. There are a number of statistics in this article and in your textbook in the Spouse Abuse section. Are the statistics in the two sources similar in findings, or do the numbers contradict each other?
