Class activities session
In table groups, share your Pinterest collection of activities.
Try to classify them into 'types' of play.
Share your ideas to the class.
Before reading what each type of play is, discuss: 'What do you think happens in each 'type' of play?'
Children use a range of materials in fantasy, in creating and representing their own ideas and understandings through imaginative play. In acting out, imagining and representing through play, their thinking and oral language skills are enhanced. This is one of the major ways in which children construct, make sense of and understand their world.
This is the type of play where children are investigating the properties of things; finding out, exploring the environment, trying things out, often with mediums such as water, magnets, sand and magnifying glasses.
Children require sensory experiences through things such as water, clay, finger paint, aroma and touch. This is often an area that is neglected in the learning environment and is particularly useful with children's emotions, helping them to be calm and to have a safe outlet.
Can you sort your activities into these 'types'?
Bass & Walker (2015) also proposes these play elements as important subsets:?
Dramatic?
Sensory?
Collage?
Construction?
Painting and drawing?
Science and nature?
Tinkering and Carpentry?

In your groups, read from Bass & Walker 2015:

Chapter 6 Creating an intentional and engaging learning environment, pp. 101-107
Record key points for each element above, such as definitions and main pros, in the Padlet.
What do the different types of Play look like in an Early Years Learning Environment?
In small groups, with the bag of recycled materials, plan a play activity that is aligned to one of the aforementioned types of play.
Share your activity idea with the class. Articulate your play activity using this scaffold:
Demonstrate and describe your setup and activity.
