Quantitative Project Assignment -

Proposal - The mechanical properties of bone include stiffness, strength and ability to absorb energy elastically. This may be analyzed based on the bone material and structural properties of the specific bone that's being analyzed. The overall topic can be related to bone and a quantitative biomechanical application that relates to it.

Suggestions -

  • Sale associate.
  • Open and close the store.
  • Store Cleaning.
  • Blackbook.
  • Help setting the weekly store selling goal.
  • Cashier.
  • Online orders assistance.

The topic of the project is based on the proposal presented above, the guidelines are for a more detailed report of the same proposal.

Project Guidelines -

Quantitative Biomechanics Project Report, Presentation and Proposal: Students will be required to write the Introduction/Literature Review (including hypothesis) and Methods section relating to any quantitative biomechanical application approved by the instructor. This will be an individual project. You will formulate your problem, propose it, and present orally to the class at the end of the semester. Each individual will turn in an approximately 5 page (dbl spaced) report in APA scientific report format. Each student will individually present a 5 to 10 minute oral presentation on their respective topics. References (at least 5 peer reviewed, quantitative biomechanics related references) must be cited. The proposal should be a brief description of your biomechanical problem and why you are choosing it. You must cite at least one peer reviewed reference in the proposal.

Learning Objectives:

1) Reinforce course learning objectives through reviewing, writing and presenting about a quantitative biomechanics topic of interest.

2) Increase biomechanics and scientific literacy.

Project Detailed Guidance -

Introduction - A strong introduction engages the reader in the problem of interest and provides a context for the study at hand. In introducing the research concern, the writer should provide a clear rationale for why the problem deserves new research and answer several questions, including the following:

1) What is the importance of the study? Why should this study be performed? Answers to this question may be derived from observations of nature or from the literature.

2) What background knowledge already exists about this subject? The answer to this question must review and summarize the literature, showing the historical development of an idea and including the confirmations, conflicts, and gaps in existing knowledge. Make sure to reference within the body of the introduction whenever using anything other than your own thoughts. You should paraphrase others' work & reference. Whereas it is impractical to exhaustively describe all prior research, the most current and relevant studies should be cited.

3) What is the specific purpose of the proposed study? The purpose of the experiment is why the experiment should be done (what are you trying to demonstrate). Clearly link the background information to your proposed investigation.

4) What is the hypothesis? The research hypothesis is the educated guess regarding what you expect to happen. Do NOT assume the null hypothesis. Make an educated guess as to the direction of the hypothesis.

Methods - The methods section simply explains the actual methods of the experiment. There is no discussion of any issues but a description of the actual events of data collection. As the name implies, the materials and methods used in the experiments should be reported in this section. The difficulty in writing this section is to provide enough detail for the reader to understand the experiment without overwhelming him or her. The ideal Method section is written in a clear manner, such that another researcher could duplicate the study. In a clear study, the author explicates the research design and plan for analysis, noting whether conditions were manipulated or naturalistic, whether groups were randomly assigned, and whether the design explored variables within or between participants (APA, 2010). Generally, this section attempts to answer the following questions:

1) What are the independent (manipulation or condition) and dependent (measured) variables? At least one of your dependent variables must be fit within the category of quantitative biomechanics variables. If you are unsure if your dependent variable fits this category, ask your professor.

2) What is the research design? Describe whether conditions (independent variables) were manipulated or naturalistic, whether groups were randomly assigned, and whether the design explored variables within or between participants.

3) What is the subject sample population? Describe the relevant specific demographics (age, gender, exercise state, health state, height, weight, etc.) and why this sample was chosen.

4) What materials, equipmentor technology will be used?

a) How will they be they used?

b) Where and when will the data be collected?

c) Describe why the measures are reliable and valid for assessing the variables of interest.

Measures should be appropriately referenced, including notation of their reliability and validity, and any adaptations to their customary use should be noted.
