Assignment:

Technology exists today to identify different genetic mutations in humans (see "A Medical Perspective: Genetics and Detection of Human Genetic Disorders" on page 700 of your textbook). Genetic defects can be identified in utero to adulthood. This can be very helpful for identifying diseases and creating a treatment plan. However, there is the possibility that one would find out they have a genetic problem that leads to an incurable disease. For this discussion, consider the following questions, and post your thoughts on one or more of these topics. Your posts can either start a thread or comment on someone else's thread, but you must have a minimum of two posts.

  • What are the implications of knowing your genetic code?
  • Would you want to know if you have the genes for an incurable disease?
  • Does having the genes always mean that you will get the disease?
  • Should your insurance company get to know your genetic code?
  • Who does get to know your genetic code if you have your genome sequenced?
  • There are many other ethical questions that could be raised. Feel free to start a thread with an additional question.
