Question - Student Reflections on the Overturn of Roe v. Wade
As a community, we understand that abortion is one of the most emotionally charged and divisive issues in our society. It brings out intense feelings that have been shaped by our moral, religious, and philosophical beliefs.
As nursing students, you undoubtedly had your own, deeply personal reaction to the recent decision made by the supreme court to overturn Roe v. Wade. Furthermore, because you work in or will be working in health care, your personal reaction is likely impacted by the new challenges and uncertainties now present in your role as a healthcare professional.
No federal law protects or prohibits abortion. Overturning Roe v. Wade leaves abortion laws to the states, about hald of which have banned or placed various restrictions on abortion. As healthcare professionals, it is important for you to understand the legal environment in the states in which you will be working, as well as surrounding states, as they may send patients to your state or draw patients from your region.
Since abortion is a procedure provided by the health care system, changes to its accessibility and legality will have implications for not just your patients, but their families, communities, and the entire healthcare industry.
How can the nursing and healthcare community best respond in this moment? What are the implications for patients and population health, as well as the ripple effects on the delivery of health care across our communities?
