Module 1 Thought Paper Instructions:
For the purpose of your Thought Paper, present a well-formulated definition of what the Humanities are. This definition should not be exhaustive nor recite the standard dictionary treatment of the term (in fact, avoid such definitions for this assignment). I am more interested in seeing what your first thoughts are on the subject at hand are after reading the first chapter of the text and what the term means to you after considering the subject as a rigorous practice in the Humanities for the first time. You should only attempt this assignment after doing the first weeks reading.
Note: A good approach to your Thought Paper might be to consider what your initial ignorant layman's ideas of the subject were in comparison to what you learned in Chapter 1; however, the structure of your theme is up to you. I do suggest paying special attention to the different types of practices that of interest to Humanists when studying Humanities: Art, Literature, Music, History and Philosophy are good places to start. That is, what is it that we are doing in a Humanities class, how is it different from the Social Sciences of say Psychology, Sociology, or Anthropology? Why are they not the same?
