CAse Study: In order to understand cultural processes in development, therefore, it is necessary to acknowledge the holistic features of culture, as Rogoff [this issue] argues, and as generations of anthropologists have emphasized [Whiting and Whiting, 1960]. How the pieces fit together is in fact the distinctive contribution of culture to human development. Describing how the whole came to be that way is a historical task; it is, as Rogoff says, the understanding of a narrative, not specifying the intersection of categorical variables. Beyond that, however, the developmentalist will want to investigate features of the whole for their regulation of early growth; the 'regularity of cultural configurations that Rogoff highlights have their unique, contextual origins, but ultimately their developmental impact can be delineated in more positivist terms.
