Research Question: What are the fundamental understandings of travel and encountering Did otherness express in the required Unit 3 texts? How do these texts understand and present Kapuscinski's idea of "cultures as mirrors" in similar and different ways?
2-part Title with Colon: use a Thematic Title that expresses the central theme of your essay. It needs to be different from the assignment theme. Place a colon after your Thematic Title, then a Declarative Title that focuses your essay and provides a specific sense of its main purpose.
Introductory Paragraph: You must introduce the main theme, writers, and texts, and conclude your introduction with a specific 2-sentence Thesis Statement. Your introduction should serve both to stimulate reader interest and clarify the main focal points of your essay.
Body Paragraphs: The Body of your essay must systematically compare and contrast the required texts, their central understanding of travel and encountering Otherness, and the similarities and differences in their experiences of travel. You must quote and cite each required Unit 3 text multiple times.
You may use subtitles if you find it helpful, or you may write a straight-through narrative without subtitles. See The Little Seagull for examples.
Personal Paragraph: Late in P3 but before your concluding paragraph, switch to 1st Person and write a personal paragraph of Descriptive Narrative, telling a brief descriptive story of Being Otherized, being seen as different or Other. Be sure to open this paragraph with a specific
connection to either Kapuscinski or Ehrlich, a similar passage in their work. Switch back to formal academic style to conclude.
Concluding Paragraph: Conclude your essay in formal academic style by crystalizing your understanding of these texts, their fundamental similarities and differences. Clarify the essential importance and significance in the main theme, Encountering Otherness and Difference. In particular, clarify how these texts understand and present Kapuscinski's idea of "cultures as mirrors".Works Cited page: Cite all required Unit 3 texts along with biographical sources for each author.
Required Texts: Travels with Herodotus by Ryszard Kapuscinski (ch.1-4, 5-8, 21-22, 27-28); The Solace of Open Spaces by Gretel Ehrlich (ch.1 and ch.12); "The Photographer and the Philosopher" by Pico Iyer; and 2 Secondary Texts you locate via MCC Library Research Databases and Academic Search Complete.
Keys to Success: Use your completed Unit 3 Reading Journal to prepare a P3 Outline. Recognize that P3 is a complex, multifaceted assignment involving multiple texts, authors, and complicated themes. An outline will help you to structure your material and present it in
coherent and meaningful ways.
Place your 2-sentence Thesis Statement at the top of your P3 Outline; I suggest you build your outline first, then compose your thesis, revising it for clarify of expression. It is a precise, crystalized answer to the Research Question, the guiding expression that drives the main points of your paper.
Remember that it will help your readers understand more fully if you present some biographical background on each author and text. Contextualizing each writer and text will provide a fuller, more detailed and specific understanding of the central theme and your thesis.
