Assignment - Ethics are similar to morals in the sense that they both have to do with right and wrong. The difference between them is subtle. Morals refer to personal beliefs and judgments (i.e., I believe that murder is sinful or wrong). Ethics guide people about how they are expected to behave regardless of personal belief systems (i.e., murder violates another person's human rights). In this example, a person has concluded that taking another's life is wrong, but morality comes from within and ethics is the standard or generalized recipe for how to act (often coming from society or professionalism).
Ethics is an important issue in all professions but especially in anthropology. When we think about ethics, we have to consider the "right" way to act, not just as an individual, but as an anthropologist. We have a duty as a professional, a foreigner, a guest, and an academic to first do no harm and then to weigh what is best for professional standards and the people (or primates) with whom we work. Ethical choices are about navigating "gray" situations when the opposing needs of community, professionalism, environment, etc, must be considered.
You were required to watch supplemental videos for Chapters 3-5 in which various ethical issues in anthropology were presented. Post a brief description about the varied sides of one ethical issue from the videos and state your opinion about it. What are the ethical issues that must be navigated? Your post must be at least 200 words long.
Then, comment constructively on one of your fellow student's post about this issue. For full credit, you must use standard grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc.
