Case Study:
You are a level two practical nursing student on a post-partum unit. You are caring for Angelica, who has just given birth, 16 hours ago, to her first child by cesarean section. Angelica was born with dwarfism and stands 3 feet 10 inches tall. When you enter Angelica's room to introduce yourself, she tells you that she is frustrated. She is not able to lift her infant independently out of the bassinette because the crib, in which the bassinette sits, is too high. She reports that the nurses seem impatient with having to come into her room each time she rings her bell to assist her and she is frustrated that the bassinette is not accessible to her to independently care for her newborn as she would like to.
Angelica requests that the bassinette be removed from the crib and placed on the floor so that she can independently pick up her newborn. When you report this request to the nurse assigned to care for Angelica, the nurse states "our policy is for newborns to be placed within the bassinette of the crib when not in parents' arms. If our hospital equipment doesn't meet her needs then we can request an order from her doctor to send her home early."
