Questions:

  1. What is attachment? Attachment is essentially an emotional bond that occurs between two individuals (Santrock, 2021, p.130).
  2. When does attachment form? Attachment is crucial within the first year of life but from 7 to 27 months, specific attachments develop (Santrock, 2021, Slide 29).
  3. How is attachment formed? Be sure to describe the behaviors caregivers must do in order for infants to develop attachment. Attachment forms in phases, for example, Phase 1 consists of infants directing their attachment to human silhouettes (Santrock, 2021, P.131) Caregivers must be regularly with the child, as babies seek to contact this way (Santrock, 2021, P.131).
  4. What are the different types of attachments? Name and describe each of them. Secure attachment is when the caregiver is used as a foundation from which to explore (Santrock, 2021, Slide 31). Insecure avoidant attachment is when the child actively avoids the caregiver (Santrock, 2021, Slide 31). Insecure resistant attachment is when the child longs for the caregiver but fights close contact (Santrock, 2021, Slide 31). Insecure disorganized attachment is when the child shows strong signs of avoiding and resisting the caregiver (Santrock, 2021, Slide 31).
  5. Describe the "Strange Situation" technique that Mary Ainsworth used to assess attachment. The Strange Situation technique that Mary Ainsworth used is essentially separating and reuniting a child and caregiver with the addition of an adult stranger (Santrock, 2021, P.131). This technique would determine a child's attachment type.
  6. How does quality of attachment affect development beyond infancy? Having a good quality form of attachment is important for development beyond infancy because it foreshadows later functioning, which was tested in a longitudinal study by Alan Sroufe (Santrock, 2021, P.132).
  7. What happens to children that form unhealthy attachments? If a child has an unhealthy attachment to their caregiver, they typically fear strangers and are upset with minor separations (Santrock, 2021, P.132).
  8. What are the benefits of enrolling a child in daycare? Children who had more experience in child care centers, such as daycare, had somewhat better cognitive and language development than children with less child care center experience; they also had somewhat better letter and number skills (NICHD, 2006, P.24).
  9. What are the benefits of staying home with the child? Staying at home with the child didn't hinder development instead, most children had similar scores to those in childcare centers; this means that staying at home with the child allowed for the same achievement scores without the negative impacts of sending the child to daycare (NICHD, 2006, P.29).
