Instructions:

Write a paper with a thesis statement based on evidence in the primary sources provided in the attached document. Your paper will be a response to the question provided below, with your answer serving as your thesis statement. Rely on as many of the texts as possible for evidence to back up your thesis. You must cite at least four primary sources and one visual primary source.

Assume that your reader has read the documents, sat through class lectures and discussions, read the course textbook and required readings, and has a basic understanding of the time period. Your paper should not merely explain the sources or the time period but make an original argument.

In addition to using the primary sources provided, you will locate and cite at least one secondary source. The final draft must include at least two secondary sources. The secondary sources must be scholarly works written by academic researchers, professors, or experts on the topic.

Examples of secondary sources include monographs (books by one author), edited volumes (collections of essays by experts in the field), and journal articles printed by academic publishers. Non-scholarly secondary sources include websites, newspaper articles, and documentaries. These sources can help you contextualize the time period, but they are not appropriate for an academic essay.

To locate secondary sources, use specific keywords to search FIU's library catalog and JSTOR (an online repository of journal articles), which you can access with your FIU credentials. You will find useful keywords in the textbook, class presentations, and class overviews (weeks seven and eight). Review and select your secondary sources carefully. Consider how a secondary source relates to the essay question and how it will support your argument. The textbook contains a list of suggested readings on page 681 and especially page 753.

The list contains examples of scholarly secondary sources, you are free to use them.

While it is not prohibited, I discourage you from using primary sources beyond the documents provided. Your argument should draw evidence from the primary sources provided in the attached document and the secondary sources you select.
