Quesiton: Comment 1: Leaders and managers are not one in the same. Leaders do not need to be managers and sometimes managers are not leaders. Leadership is often referred to as an art whereas management is a science. The differences in leadership and management are related to the fact that management typically comes from a title or position. Leadership quite simply can be anyone who leads others regardless of their position ("The difference between", 2018). John Kotter, professor at Harvard University says "Management is a set of processes that keep an organization functioning. They make it work today - they make it hit this quarter's numbers. The processes are about planning, budgeting, staffing, clarifying jobs, measuring performance, and problem-solving when results did not go as planned." Leadership is very different. "It is about aligning people to the vision, that means buy-in and communication, motivation and inspiration." (Radcliffe, 2013).
Leadership and management does overlap in the skills required to do them both well. In most organizations, managers must lead and leaders must also manage their teams. As a nurse leader, the opportunity to expand their influence comes from this overlap in leadership and management. Leadership comes in many forms. Servant leaders serve their team first to empower them to be the best that they can be. Leaders who lead by example show their team the way by modeling the behaviors that are expected of them and a culture is created by example. Nurse leaders have the greatest opportunity to influence change by taking advantage of the overlap that exists when in a position of management and the nurse is able to manage the productivity as well as lead their team to achieve greater success through influence and inspiration of a shared vision.
Ratcliffe, R. (2013, July 29). What's the difference between leadership and management?
The difference between leadership and management. (2018).
Comment 2: In nursing there are overlapping areas in management and leadership concepts. However the ways in which they differ can be seen as well. Leadership roles primarily focus on the human relationships and the dynamics in which workers carry out their tasks. Whereas management is more driven by efficacy of task accomplishment rather than how it is carried out. One key way in which the two overlap is in the safe, effective and timely manner in which patient care is carried out. It is clear that there is a separation between management and the floor staff (GCU, 2018).
A significant point to mention is that in order to be a leader there is not always a definitive position title. One can have the responsibility and role of a leader in their organization and not be at the management level. Leadership is more of an art form, because they c\take on the role of motivating, affirming, and being a symbol of responsibility without a title. They are the ones building relationships to develop and move the focus forward.
As a nurse leader it is wise to take advantage of those leadership roles established and encourage them to speak on behalf of the team. For example a manager would be inclined to hear of a conflict from a nurse leader, as the collaboration and support is encouraged. Managers want to see that a leader can handle a conflict and bring about resolution because they know that the leader has the ability to influence ASU, 2018).
