The medical assistant performs a dressing change on a patient with an active staph infection then after completing the procedure, the medical assistant removes the gloves then immediately draws a COVID booster for a cancer patient in the room next door. The injection is administered without gloves. After documenting and monitoring the patient's response to the booster, the medical assistant moves to the next room to perform a venipuncture, dons gloves, rips, and tears the index finger of the left glove off to feel for a vein. After the procedure, the medical assistant realizes they have not performed any hand washing or hand hygiene after caring for the last three patients.
