Problem: In many ways, Jason is like the typically developing 8 year olds in the neighborhood. He plays soccer, skates, swims, participates in Boy Scouts, and is in the second grade. Jason has a great sense of humor and is a bit mischievous. His mother makes every effort to provide him with a balance of social and academic opportunities. But in some ways, Jason's experience is unique. He has Down syndrome, a unilateral hearing loss and moderate intellectual disability. His reading skills are at a kindergarten level. At the local Down syndrome family support group, Jason's mother is inspired by Chris, who also has Down Syndrome and has done well. Chris, who is 30 years old, graduated from high school with an equivalency certificate, lives at home, and takes public transportation to the office where he has worked for the past 9 years. How may these guys' opportunities have changed based on changed in the way intellectual disability has been viewed throughout past centuries vs. today?
