Zippos -a responsible circus?
Zippos is a small travelling circus, founded in 1986. It has an international staff of 70 including its owner Martin Burton. It tours Britain from February to November every year taking the Big Top, the acts, their equipment, and the performing horses from town to town each week.
Circuses may embody family entertainment, but they are also controversial. The word "circus" conjures up images of poorly treated lions, elephants, and other wild animals. It also brings to mind unsafe facilities, diesel-belching trucks, and unhygienic food. Consequently, over the years, circuses have attracted unwanted attention from local authorities, immigration officials and animal rights campaigners.
Like many SME (Small Medium Enterprise), "and other jobs as required" is standard part of everyone's contract of employment. Even the owner appears as one of the clowns. He is also one of the of initiators of the circus industry's code of conduct on animal welfare, and was a pioneer of circus without wild animals.
According to Burton (owner), much of his time is taken up with filling out risk assessment as the industry is held to ever higher health and safety standards. But he is also aware that a good reputation is essential to his company's future, and on the Zippos website there is a page devoted to the various causes it supports, as well as a section on the circus academy that the company has established to train future generations of circus performers.
