Assignment: Read the following situation and answer the questions which follow:
John just started working at Hilton as the head of housekeeping five months ago. When he took the job, he was not anticipating the lack of motivation in his staff. The 300-bed hotel has 30 full-time and 10 part-time housekeeping staff positions that he cannot keep filled. He is currently working with 25 full-time and 10 part-time staff.
The housekeeping staff are to clean 8 to 10 rooms a day, and because they are short on staff, he often has to ask staff to work 6 days a week to cover for the reduced number of staff members. The staff work hard and rarely are able to take vacation time. This has made for a workforce that feels overworked and underappreciated.
It is coming into the hotel's busy season and the hotel occupancy will be at 90 to 95% each night for the next 3 months. Because the property is not unionized, John has no authority to pay the employees more, but he knows he has to do something to change the situation and motivate his staff to meet the upcoming demand. The current situation has led to a high turnover and a lot of overtime, which is having a negative impact on his budget.
Question 1. Other than increasing their wage, what could John do to help motivate his staff?
Question 2. What are the budget concerns?
