Several questions can be asked, and as you answer them, you enrich your own experience of the artwork.

Has one specific element been employed, or have more than one been incorporated?
How do the elements of the art piece work together, or do they not work together?
What is the most important element in the work?Are the lesser elements important?
Does the artwork evoke thoughts or emotions?If it does, how?
Are the media and materials appropriate for the piece?
