Task 1:
A) Consider the conventional pedestal fan presented as an exploded view in Figure 1. Tabulate at least seven (7) different components/parts and identify traditional material/s used for each of these parts. It is required to identify parts representing at least two of the three categories of engineering materials. For example, fan guard is manufactured from low carbon steel wires welded together to form a mesh.
B) For each part, discover the rationale behind the use of these materials. These reasons or justifications can be provided on the same table in section (a) above.
C) What are the manufacturing methods followed to produce five (5) of these parts identified in a) above? A brief description of each method is sufficient; however, it is required to select five (5) parts to represent five (5) different manufacturing processes.
Task 2:
It is required to manufacture an improved pedestal fan in mass scale for the export market. Materials for different parts must be selected to assure significant improvements in following aspects.
1. Overall weight
2. Durability
3. Material and processing cost
It is required to select few parts for improvement as the first step.
A) Select five (5) components you have shortlisted in Task 1 to improve the pedestal fan. Tabulate the selected five (5) components and identify the aspect (property) to be improved. Note that the intended improvements must be either the reduction of overall weight or enhancing durability or reducing the material and processing cost or a combination of these properties.
B) Suggest new materials to fulfil these requirements. In this situation, it is important to select new materials representing at least two (2) categories of engineering materials.
C) What are the associated drawbacks and limitations of using these new materials? Identify one disadvantage for each material.
D) It was noticed that the fan guard has undergone corrosion. Suppose it is made from low carbon steel. Suggest:
I. A replacement material to avoid corrosion, and
II. Two (2) methods of protection prior to corrosion if mild steel is used.
E) The shaft of a fan underwent a sudden failure. An engineer commented that the fan was not assembled properly during the manufacturing process and failed due to fatigue.
I. Discuss the validity of the above statement.
II. Illustrate the mechanism of fatigue failure using suitable sketch/es.
III. Explain how to overcome or minimize chances of fatigue failure.
Task 3:
A) Download the following Materials Selection Charts (Ashby Charts). Assume strength is a mandatory requirement. Provide references for these charts.
• Strength vs density
• Strength vs durability
• Strength vs cost
B) Using the Ashby Charts in part a) above or otherwise, identify the best material groups for each of the following requirements.
• Strong and light weight
• Strong and durable
• Strong and cheap
Explain your approach in this selection.
C) Discuss the sustainability of these material groups identified in b) above.
