5. Review the criteria of mental health and write a self-evaluation of your areas of strength and areas of challenges in terms of your personal growth. Plan to keep the self-evaluation and review it at the end of the semester to evaluate your personal growth. Begin the process of self-analysis by considering the following questions and setting specific goals for this course and for your future growth:
- Who am I?
- What is important to me, and what do I value?
- Am I open to my feelings, and can I express them?
- What type of role model am I?
- Why do I want to help others?
- What are your personal beliefs about client welfare and social responsibility, and do you act on these beliefs?
- What are your own feelings about mental health nursing? Do you see this as a career choice for the future?
- Do you feeling strong and ready to provide interventions for clients with mental health challenges?
- Do you have any fears related to this course or to this area of nursing?
6. To better understand the client who is beginning treatment for a mental health issue, think about the last time you needed to ask someone for help. How did you feel? What made you feel uncomfortable? What would have made you more comfortable? How can you translate this knowledge into behaviours that may be helpful as you initiate a nurse/client relationship?
7. What are some of the steps that nurses could take to help ensure that multicultural groups of all kinds receive culturally appropriate treatment for difficulties with addictions and mental health issues?
