One of the most puzzling questions in biology is how multi-cellularity arose. Explain the conditions under which having a body with more than one cell would have been adaptive. What kinds of problems do having larger and/or more cells present to an organism? What are some strategies used by these organisms to deal with these problems? Finally, a number of eukaryote groups are represented by colonial and multicellular members. Using your knowledge of these two categories, what criteria would you use to distinguish between an organism that is colonial and one that is "truly" multicellular?
