At the age of 5, Janelle (a pseudonym) began to suffer from her stepfather's sexual assault, which lasted until she was 13 years old and came forward about it. She believes that no one in her family, including her mother and three siblings, knew about the abuse until someone told her younger sister and then her mother. Thankfully, Janelle's mother quickly rallied to her side, believed her, and informed the authorities of the assault. Significant safeguards like these parental responses may have prevented Janelle from internalizing blame, humiliation, or helplessness. Janelle was afraid, but she cooperated with authorities and helped them put her abusive stepfather behind bars. Shortly after coming forward, she sought out professional help from a counselor who reinforced her belief that she had done nothing to deserve the abuse. Her siblings distanced themselves from their stepfather and gave their complete support to Janelle. Janelle eventually endured more challenges, including the death of distant loved ones, violence in her area, and a teenage pregnancy. She made it through high school and is now a college student without showing signs of major psychopathology, given the traumas she experienced. She worries a lot that her daughter may be abused, but she's learned to cope with her fears and keep her daughter safe in a variety of ways. Even though she has had trouble keeping developmentally appropriate expectations of her daughter, it seems that she and her child have a close relationship.
