Unfortunately, many "non-core" subjects are at risk due to the state of the education budget. We are experiencing these hardships nationwide. Not only are electives being cut out, but extra-curricular opportunities are being cut as well. Many schools in our area have done away with frosh/soph sports and now only have JV and Varsity. This drastically reduces the opportunity for our marginalized students to get involved in a sport and, in turn, receive a comprehensive education. We find that in today's society, little importance is placed on health and physical education in schools because little importance is placed on these topics in the home. There is a direct correlation between school and community life. In order to get around this, it is possible to integrate these topics into "core" subjects such as math, English, science and social studies. Question to the class: What are some other ways that we could integrate health and PE topics into our "core" lessons? Share any lessons that you have developed or some that you might implement.
