Homework: Diagnosis in the Practice of Marriage & Family Therapy
Instructions
For the first homework, you will explore the importance of diagnosis in the clinical care provided by marriage and family therapists. Given that an MFT's primary function is to diagnose and treat mental health and substance abuse problems, it is important to recognize the importance of and the limitations of the DSM-5. This homework will ask you to reflect on the major reasons you need a diagnosis, some of the limitations of the DSM-5, and the importance of considering positive aspects of your patients' and clients' lives.
For this homework, please write an essay or produce a 2 to 3-minute video clip that addresses each of the following questions. You must cite the points made in the homework with evidence from the readings (and other information). Papers should be written in a third-person voice. Do not use personal pronouns (I, me, we, you, etc.). The homework must have a minimum of two scholarly references supporting the points made in the homework.
