Question: Without laws or some kind of regulations, there would be chaos. In chapter three, both at the end of the chapter in your textbook and in the companion reader, we have examples of some of the earliest law codes known to man. Take a look at those again (again, the ones at the end of chapter three in the textbook, and specifically The Code of Hammurapi in the document reader) and think about what those selections covered. What are some of the issues that the law codes try to address? What kinds of distinctions - class, gender, occupation - are present, and why do you think that would be? Do these selections indicate where the source of authority is? Finally, what do these selections tell us about the importance of things like slavery and the family in ancient societies?
