Metacognition is thinking about thinking. What are some of the benefits of metacognition and why is it important for doctoral learners to understand their metacognitive processes?
Part 1
Such an interesting discussion topic, having just finished teaching a class on evidence based practice for the pre-licensure accelerated nursing students. As I teach them to think through decisions, identify information needed, understand process of assumptions, and justify the end result, they have learned. I believe that metacognition has the benefit of understanding, growth, reasoning, and knowledge.
In the nursing profession, Barbara Carper’s seminal work in 1978 has given us a framework to think about knowing and therefore, about thinking. Unlike many other professions it is not purely focused on scientific or “empiric” knowledge but rather other ways we think, learn, and come to know. These other methods are ethical, aesthetic, and personal.
