Assignment:

Pick two countries: one among the OECD countries (i.e., these countries are often regarded as more developed nations), and one should be a non-OECD nation. Please do NOT choose the USA since we looked at it during Lectures 1 and 2. The main goal of this assignment is to compare and contrast how a developed nation's economy and trade policies differ from a developing country and how globalization affects nations. Analyze the following for the year 2021-2023:

  1. Provide a GDP breakdown for each country.
  2. What are their primary sources of exports and imports? (Here, mention at least five products or services for each category). Provide their percentage share and illustrate it graphically. Also, discuss what their main comparative advantages are. In what specific industry(ies)? Here, you can use your judgment by analyzing the GDP breakdowns and the main products/services the country exports.
  3. Graphically show their net export in the last 20 years. Make sure to mention whether the net export is in a trade surplus, deficit, or balance.
  4. Who are each country's "Top 5" trading partners? Provide numerical values (either in dollars or percentages).
  5. What are their exchange rate policies (i.e., whether it is a fixed or floating system)? Describe some of their exchange rate policies.
  6. What trade policies does each country have (i.e., tariffs, quotas, etc.)? How about their main trade protection policies? What specific domestic industries are they trying to protect?
  7. Are they members of any international organizations regarding international trade (e.g., NAFTA, EU, WTO, etc.)? What are these organizations? How do these organizations help with conducting international trade?
  8. Graphically show how the net migration has changed from 1990 to 2020 for both countries [better if you can put both into one graph]. Analyze and describe the graph. Where are the citizens of the country you chose mostly emigrating to? Has there been any mass emigration in recent years? If so, what was the main reason?
  9. Graphically show how the revenue from tourism (as a percentage of exports) has changed from 1990 to 2020 for both countries [better if you can put both into one graph]. Analyze and describe the graph. Are there any travel restrictions for foreign citizens who want to visit your chosen countries? Discuss some of the policies imposed by the government regarding tourism.
  10. For the non-OECD country, provide at least one example of how the local culture has been affected by globalization in the last 30 years.

What are some of the cultural challenges the nation is facing? What has the government done to avoid such challenges? *Note: data for questions 3, 8, and 9 can be obtained from the World Bank (Link is below)

Suggestions

Keep your work in an academic format. It would be best to assume you are writing a formal report to your boss in a government agency. A nicely written project will have the following sections:

  • Introduction
  • The report section: here, you would include your data findings - nicely organized in graphs/tables and detailed descriptions. You are ultimately trying to compare and contrast between developed and developing nations.
  • Policy Recommendations/Conclusion
