Miranda Greggs is new to the human resource (HR) department at New Health Memorial Hospital (NHMH). She was hired in the past 30 days due to NHMH's anticipated expansion via a new wing, three satellite health centers, a community outreach health program, and a teen peer-to-peer health outcomes research study that NHMH is leading. The demand for recruiting and hiring personnel to accommodate this level of growth meant an increase in the HR department staff.
Miranda noted during her first week at NHMH that the current personnel recruitment methods for non-executive positions include internal electronic job boards, postings on NHMH's public website, job announcements on employment websites like Monster.com, and an employee referral bonus program to encourage current employees to recruit qualified candidates they know. With the level of staffing needed for the new programs and to meet her weekly new-hire target goals, Miranda knows she will need to implement new strategies to attract more job applicants.
While reviewing the current list of applicants in her inbox, Miranda opens her browser and starts looking up the first few names on Facebook. One applicant, in particular, is very qualified for the nurse manager position at one of the new community health clinics. Miranda has already arranged for her to come in and interview the following day. The lead physician at that clinic is a religiously conservative man who has lobbied hard publicly for taxpayers to pick up more of NHMH's healthcare costs. As Miranda scans the applicant's Facebook profile, her heart sinks. Her family photos clearly show that she is gay and that she strongly supports the gubernatorial candidate who wants to end taxpayer subsidies to all healthcare organizations. Despite being qualified for the job, Miranda wonders if she should cancel the interview as it seems like it will not be a good match.
What are some ideas for how Miranda can reach a wider audience in her recruitment efforts? How can she different her message and it's delivery for different staffing levels (e.g., nurses, community outreach workers, teens, facilities management staff)?
