Question No 2 : Discussion Questions:
Ethical Issues in Managed Care
Although the term "managed care" refers to a rather heterogeneous group of institutions, a feature common to all managed care organizations (MCOs) is a systematic approach to controlling what had been a skyrocketing escalation in the country's healthcare costs. The increasing prominence of both medical ethics and managed care over the past three decades has resulted in, if not a head-on crash, a number of well-publicized collisions between the two. Consider the question of ethics that arises when we ask ourselves if MCOs are reducing unnecessary tests, as the HMOs and others believe should be done, or if MCOs are limiting tests for patients who really need them.
A) What are some ethical dimensions (give 2) involved in participating in a managed health care system and what are the provider's responsibilities to the patient?
B) What would you do if you are processing billing statements for patients and noticed your physician. the employer has entered patient charges for relatively minor procedures that were never done?
