1. How would you define appropriate eye contact? Does this vary depending on the client or culture?
2. What are some benefits of using open-ended questions? Provide examples of open-ended questions you might use with clients. How is silence used in the questioning and reflecting process?
3. Cultural considerations are very important when considering effective communication and, as you aptly indicated in your post, cultural considerations are very important when evaluating eye contact. Have you even had much contact with Native Americans, and if so (or based on some other means of study) what influence does their culture have on the use or avoidance of eye contact?
4. The varied cultural ideas about the use of eye contact and how the use of eye contact is interpreted is very important for counselors to understand. As you stated, this can help develop a positive rapport with our clients by demonstrating respect and understanding. Why do you think that some counselors do not make cultural adjustments in their work with clients?
5. I believe that open-ended questions give clients the ability to reflect on how they are really feeling, not only during their sessions but later on after they have left the session.
Questions such as "why is that important to you" or "how did you feel in that moment" allow client to elaborate verses closed questions such as "did that make you feel sad" or "was that important to you" which encourage a yes or no answer.
The silence that follows an open-ended question allows not only internal reflection for the client but allows the counselor to assess body language. This is important so the counselor can gauge the clients unspoken emotional state.

7. Describe how you will apply that learning in your daily life, including your work life.
