Problem: Over the past century in the U.S., the trend has been to increasingly criminalize drug use. Strategies have focused on controlling the supply ("drug busts" and prohibition) and trying to deter use through punishment or threat of punishment. The ultimate manifestation of this attitude has been the War on Drugs. For many people, they see no other way to try to keep both users and the public safe. If you were in a conversation with someone with this perspective (i.e., they aren't necessarily a fan of the War on Drugs, but they don't see another option), what are some alternative approaches to drugs and drug use that you might propose for keeping drug users and the public safe, and to reduce the overall costs to society?
