COMMENT ON THESE TWO POST-Evan
The Tet offensive was an attack by DRV forces on over 100 South Vietnam cities and towns. Over 70,000 troops were deployed and they temporarily took hold of South Vietnam.
Although it took the South by surprise, they were able to take it back shortly after with the help of the U.S. It impacted America's role in the war because Westmoreland called for 200,000 more troops even though he said the war was almost over.
President Johnson's approval ratings were already dropping, so he called for the rest of his campaign to be dedicated to peace rather than seeking reelection.
POST TWO -- Allison
The Vietnam War was a long and an expensive war. The worst part about this particular war was the United States was not involved in this conflict. At this point in history, the US gained absolutely nothing.
The war created a political and emotional scar that continue to haunt the US up until this day. One in every ten soldiers were killed or injured.
It was a major set back for the US foreign policy, and was a war that many would argue, the US did not need to get involved in.The US entered the war with the goal to prevent a takeover of South Vietnam by North Vietnam.
