Case Study - Shane
Students are required to complete the following case study answering the questions below.
You are a worker at a local community agency. Shane Smith has come in to see you. The service has had no previous involvement with Shane.
Shane is a 30-year-old man who has been working in the hospitality / gaming industry for approximately ten years. Shane advises you that he works shift work and long hours. Shane states that he started using cocaine about eight months ago to feel more alert and confident with new clientele at work. Shane indicated that recently he has started to have problems at work, as he is becoming "paranoid" and "aggressive" towards customers / clientele. Shane added that his attendance at work has also started to suffer as he "feels exhausted". Shane explains that this exhaustion is a combination of coming down and the long hours of working / staying awake. Shane advises you that his boss has told him that he needs to take a month off work to "sort his problems out".
Shane explains to you that he can't afford to have a month off work. He states that he has no leave entitlements left and his rent is $450.00 per week. Shane adds that he is already behind in his rent due to his cocaine use and cost.
Shane tells you that his current situation is "overwhelming", and he doesn't know what to do. Shane states that he has limited family support and that his partner (his main support) "left" him three weeks ago. He adds that he would like to make changes to his cocaine use but isn't sure where to start.
