Assignment : Electrical and Electronic Principles

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit a learner should:

1. Be able to use circuit theory to determine voltage, current and resistance in direct current (DC) circuits

2. Understand the concepts of capacitance and determine capacitance values in DC circuits

3. Know the principles and properties of magnetism

4. Be able to use single-phase alternating current (AC) theory

Scenario : -

You are working as an electrical engineering apprentice for Sanmina a Global Electronic manufacturer that manufactures educational kits for
schools and colleges. You are working in the testing department to test the equipment received from the manufacturing department. Your line manager has asked you to test all the designed circuits according to the desired standards.

As an electrical engineer, the chief engineer has decided to give you the task of analysing through calculations and taking measurements on a range of simple direct current (DC) circuits. He has given activities that will test your ability to calculate theoretical values (Current, voltage, resistance, power, energy, and charge) for a circuit and to use standard test equipment to take measurements and record and analyse the results.

1. (a) Define Kirchoff laws(KCL,KVL).

(b) By using simple circuit methods(KCL,KVL,Ohm's law) determine the following

• Current (i1),(i2),(i3)

• Power in each resistor

2. What are Series and Parallel Capacitors?

C1 = 0.10μf.

Calculate: - Total Capacitance and Total Charge. (Q=CV)

3. Define an Oscilloscope and Function Generator. Describe the characteristics of Sinusoidal waveforms and explain with graphs what happens when 2 sinusoidal waveforms are added and subtracted.

4. Study the operation and the effects of varying component parameters of a power supply circuit that includes a transformer, diodes, and capacitors

5. Using electrical theory comprehend the working of an electric motor and generator.
