Description - Ms. D presents to your office with a sore on her lip. She reports that she first noticed it a couple of days ago. It started out with what she thought was a pimple close to her lips, but then it became more of an open sore. She reports that it hurts and also has a burning/tingling sensation. On inspection, you believe that it is consistent with herpes simplex type 1.

What is the mode of transmission of herpes simplex, and what is the process by which it causes primary infection and recurrence?
