Summarize: One way the idol of self manifests is in advertising. What are our real motivations for advertising our churches? And how do we advertise them? I'm not necessarily against advertising outright. I just wonder if, most of the time, advertising is not birthed out of the idle of self that says that "my church" is really what's important, even more important than my God. Asked the question, "why are we advertising our church?" Is it because you desire to see people's lives changed by encountering the presence of God? I would imagine many would honestly be able to answer yes to this. Some, though, would not. Leaders want to see new people because they equate numbers with successful ministry, or worse, when they see new people they see more income. Church members want to see new people because it enhances their social club experience.
