Case study 1
You are a coordinator in a home and community care service. It is your job to provide counselling and support to new people who are referred to the service. You have received a referral from a local government agency to provide counselling support to Fulya, an 89-year-old Turkish woman. Fulya has agreed that it would be a good idea to have some counselling and arrangements are in place for her first appointment.
In preparation you have read her case history and understand from your preparation that as Fulya has aged, her competency in using and understanding English has diminished. Fulya has resided in her family home for 50 years, since she migrated to Australia with her husband, who passed away nearly 20 years ago. She is estranged from her only son who lives interstate.
Questions:
1. Outline what additional information you may gather from Fulya in her initial session.
2. Give four (4) examples of communication techniques that can be used to support Fulya in her counselling session.
3. How could the counsellor ensure there is a structured approach to the counselling interview based on Fulya's needs and expectations?
Case study 2
Luke Li is a 32-year-old-male who emigrated with his family from Shanghai, China to Australia when he was five years old. He is married with three young children and is attending counselling for his issues with prescribed medication.
Luke's addiction to medication started when he was approximately 24 years old and was working in a pharmacy. He was struggling under the pressures of work, being newly married with a young child, and the pressure he felt from his extended family to support them financially.
His family members are unaware of his situation and he does not want them to know for fear of shaming the family. He does not know how he is going to face them if they find out. He is also very concerned about his finances as he has to support his wife and three children, along with his parents, uncle and aunty who live with his family.
Luke asks Stuart, his counsellor, what will happen during the counselling sessions. Luke tells Stuart that he hopes he can fix his addiction to medication and help him with his finances. He also explains, in tears, that his family cannot find out about his circumstances because the shame will devastate them.
Questions:
4. Why is it important that Stuart clarifies, confirms or modifies Luke's expectations of the counselling service?
5. What are Luke's anxieties about the counselling process and why should Stuart explore these with Luke?
6. Why is it important for Stuart to acknowledge and show respect for Luke's immediate concerns?
7. Why should Stuart clarify both expectations and commitment to the counselling relationship and confirm these with Luke?
8. Identify indicators of Luke's issues that are beyond the scope of Stuart's role. What does Stuart need to consider in reporting or referring Luke bearing in mind his presenting issues and organisational requirements?
