Case: The philosophical beliefs of researchers might influence whether they consider themselves qualitative or quantitative researchers Creswell & Creswell, 2018). Along with researchers' philosophical underpinnings, the language or key words used in qualitative, as opposed to quantitative research are largely different, and reflect the attributes of qualitative approaches (Rutberg & Bouikidis, 2018). For example, when I conducted a quantitative study, I set out to answer research questions and address specific aims using questionnaires and conducted interviews to answer the research questions. I analyzed the interview questionnaire data, working with a statistician and reported the findings and described how those findings were pertinent and relevant with the literature I reviewed that helped form the basis for the study I conducted. In another study, we wanted to explore the shared lived experience of novice licensed practical nurses working in long-term care centers. Open-ended interviews were conducted with a very small sample of novice nurses. However, the interviews that were recorded and transcribed verbatim contained large amounts of data, which required a great deal of time to content analyze by the two independent researchers and form consensus on categories and themes. These two examples of a quantitative and qualitative study that I worked on have unique words that reflect the scientific approaches employed and that were driven by the problem under study. We used inductive approaches in the qualitative study and deductive methods in the quantitative study. In the quantitative study, we measured variables and examined the impact of conditions on patients' self-care management outcomes, while in the qualitative study, we were interested in collecting nurses' perceptions of their experiences of a certain phenomenon.
