Assignment:
First part Respond to questions 1 and 2
For this discussion post you are to imagine that you are working as an HR manager for a small marketing consulting firm that employs 50 people. The company is located in an urban area and has traditionally been successful at hiring a diverse set of candidates from the surrounding community.
Traditionally at your firm the company has always preferred a 4 year degree in Business Administration or a similar field when hiring new managers of its various divisions including: human resources, operations, accounting and finance. The business is located near several universities and therefore has relied upon college recruiting to find new talent.
Recently someone brought up the article: Skills-Based Hiring is Gaining Ground (included as a file in this weeks module on Canvas) and would like HR to consider whether or not policy around preference for a BA is really necessary at the firm.
Your background:
You were hired competitively only one year earlier and feel that your four year degree was valuable to help you get hired as you had no work related experience other than an internship completed in your junior year of college. Further, you feel as though the education that you received, while not all inclusive of everything you needed to learn in your job, did give you a good head start in being successful with much of what you needed to understand. You are now beginning to pay off your student loan debt.
Your job for this discussion post is to answer the following two questions after reading the article mentioned.
1.) What are the advantages of not giving preference to a candidate with a BA in Business Administration when selecting a candidate for a managerial role?
2.) What are the advantages of preferring a BA in Business Administration when selecting a candidate for a managerial role?
What will your recommendation be moving forward with the job criteria for new managerial hires?
