Prior to participating in this discussion forum, please complete the videos, readings, and Leadership & Teams activity for this week.

From the Project Implicit website (https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/faqs.html#faq1):

What are implicit and explicit stereotypes?

Stereotypes are the belief that most members of a group have some characteristic. Some examples of stereotypes are the belief that women are nurturing or the belief that police officers like donuts. An explicit stereotype is the kind that you deliberately think about and report. An implicit stereotype is one that is relatively inaccessible to conscious awareness and/or control. Even if you say that men and women are equally good at math, it is possible that you associate math more strongly with men without being actively aware of it. In this case we would say that you have an implicit math + men stereotype.

We all have implicit biases. It is a part of the human experience. This discussion forum is an opportunity for you to learn more about your implicit biases -- not as a form of judgment, but as a way to increase your own awareness. Using the Project Implicit website, take at least 2 of the various Implicit Association Tests (IAT). You are welcome to take more than 2 tests if you are interested.

After completing two IATs, return to the discussion forum to share the following:

  • Which of the tests did you choose to complete?
  • Optional: was there any particular reason that you chose these particular tests?
  • How did learning about your implicit biases make you feel?
  • Were you surprised by any of the results?
  • What were your thoughts as you were completing the tests?
  • What did you learn from completing these tests?

Self-reflect and identify areas in which you have privilege that you may not have considered before. (Avoid the impulse to deny your privilege. Everyone has some form(s) of privilege.) How might you use your privilege to assist others or to change systemic oppression?

Action Steps

  • Lead with empathy. Get an understanding of individual experiences. We all want to be heard regarding our hardships and challenges.
  • Guilt is a useless emotion. Privilege is not about guilting people into action. Acknowledge whatever privilege you have and consider ways in which you can work to equalize power.
  • Speak out against injustice -- no matter how big or small. Call people out and embrace being called out about your own privilege.
  • Take advantage of the opportunities that you do have. Find a way to make your experiences a benefit to others.
  • Be an ally for those who do not have privilege. Use your power and privilege to speak up for equitable treatment, and to speak out against bigotry and oppression.
