Daria came to the clinic and has been referred to you. As the CHW how will you help this client? She is a 20-year-old woman with 2 children, ages 1 and 5 years old. She arrived in Virginia 5 years ago after spending a year in the refugee camp. Her family members in Virginia who sponsored her would not provide any assistance when she arrived. She left Virginia soon after arriving and moved to the Twin Cities because she heard there were many people from her home country living in this area who help one another plus excellent ESL programs and job opportunities. She moved, hoping to connect with people and resources in this area.
She has had trouble keeping jobs, still struggles with the English language, and her financial assistance will soon come to an end. She feels tired all the time and says she has a hard time getting out of bed every morning. She experienced a lot of disruption from the war and the refugee camp. Daria is not willing to discuss this aspect of her life other than she does not know if her husband is alive or his whereabouts due to separating as they were fleeing from the refugee camp.
You were introduced to Daria by the public health nurse when she brought her five- year-old son for his immunizations to attend school. The public health nurse believes as a CHW you will be a good resource to her. The nurse has referred the family to medical care for numerous problems, but especially for son's asthma. Daria prefers to treat her son's asthma with teas and herbal remedies that are traditional to her culture. As a result, she does not follow the doctor's instructions or medical treatments. As a result, her son has been hospitalized four times with difficulty breathing from asthma attacks, twice resulting in the intensive care unit.
You introduce yourself to Daria and explain your role as a CHW. She promptly tells you that she knows how to take care of her family and she knows how to use health care services. "When my children or I get sick we go to the Emergency Room."
