Assignment:

Think about what excites you most about the future of health care, focusing on the opportunities for health care reform. What are possible effects of health care reform from a financial and accounting perspective?

We estimate that, on the net, the combination of provisions in the new law will reduce healthcare spending by $590 billion over 2010-2019 and lower premiums by nearly $2,000 per family. Moreover, the annual growth rate in national health expenditures could be slowed from 6.3 percent to 5.7 percent. It would raise standards of living by improving efficiency. Slowing the growth rate of health care costs by increasing efficiency raises standards of living by freeing up resources that can be used to produce other desired goods and services. The effects are roughly proportional to the degree of cost containment. By making health coverage more affordable and accessible and thus increasing the number of Americans with coverage, by funding community-based public health and prevention programs, and by supporting research and tracking on key health measures, the ACA can help begin to reduce disparities, and improve access to preventive care. Have a great week.
