Environmental Ethics

Reflect on Kimmerer's questions from p. 125: "Where do you feel your greatest sense of place? Where you feel most nurtured and supported? The place that you understand best? That you know best and knows you in return?"

Is the place you're thinking of more like a garden? More like a wilderness? More like a car? Or like something else? How does your relationship with the place reflect elements of "the good life" and/or the "Conquest way of life" as described by LaDuke?

Reflect on Kimmerer's questions from p. 124, and Pope Francis's discussion of the Earth as Sister and Mother: "Do you love the earth?" "Do you think the earth loves you back?" "What do you suppose would happen if people believed this crazy notion that the earth loved them back?"

Pope Francis "invites us to a change of heart" to respond to "both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor" and to open ourselves to a "sense of fraternity [that] excludes nothing and no one". In what ways is the environmental ethic in Laudato Si similar to or different from the "extension of ethics" and "land ethic" of Aldo Leopold? What are some of the obstacles and opportunities that Pope Francis and Aldo Leopold identify for strengthening and extending an environmental ethic?

Do you feel you have a strong relationship with nature and the land? What are the things that strengthen your connection to it? What are the things that disconnect you from it? What can you do to deepen your connection to it and help others do the same? Who do you know that has the deepest relationship with nature? What can you learn from them?

Our Daily Bread: Exploitation and Organizing

What hardships and threats, environmental and otherwise, have workers at Fyffes faced? How do they think forming a union will help, and how and why did the company so forcefully oppose the union?

What are "corporate social responsibility programs" (CSR) and why do the authors of this report say they are "futile"? Have you adjusted your purchasing choices as a consumer based on the situation of workers of a company? Would you consider doing so? What approach to responding to the situation of the Fyffes workers do the authors favor instead of CSR?
