Assignment:
Task: Apply the Modern Epidemiology Triangle (See page 24 of text) to a Chronic Disease Indicator (CDI) for states in the US.
What are CDI? A set of surveillance indicators developed by consensus among CDC, the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE), and the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD).
CDI enables public health professionals and policymakers to retrieve uniformly defined state and selected metropolitan-level data for chronic diseases and risk factors that have a substantial impact on public health.
These indicators are essential for surveillance, prioritization, and evaluation of public health interventions.
Steps
1. Access the CDC website Chronic Disease Indicators. The site will have a picture of the USA and 5 dark green headers.
2. Select options:
Explore CDI by Location: select United States (do not press GO)
Category: select an indicator from the pull down list (press GO). Select an indicator different from others. I chose Diabetes
3. The U.S. map will show the a measure (e.g., number, prevalence, age-adjusted prevalence, etc.) of the indicator in states. The legend explains the colors in each state. The Measure Definitions section explains the meaning of the measure presented.
4. Access other websites to identify components of the Modern Epidemiology Triangle (causative factors, populations affected, risk factors). See the power point slides and your text to understand the modern epidemiology triangle.
