Communication Styles: Biased word choices

I have certainly been put off by word choices made by others in communicating with me - specifically as it pertains to age. For a good part of my adult life, I enjoyed looking younger than I am, which means that I have often been subject to being called a kid or disregarded. Regardless of how I appear, people make assumptions about my age that I find offensive. Often I find it they consider you a kid; they discount what you have to say. Other word choices that I find to be off-putting include "honey," and "sweetie." It seems very demeaning to me to call someone those terms. These word choices tend to discredit the speaker, and effects my self-esteem which makes it difficult for me to converse comfortably.
