Instructions: Read the below scenario about a new manager's first 90 days on the job. Identify two things that Carly did well and two things that she should have done differently. Consider what advice would you give Carly about how to conduct herself on the first day and in those first three months.

Scenario:

Carly has just been hired in a new management position at ABC Company. Prior to her first day Carly began digging deeper into the company's background by reviewing their strategic plans for the past two years. She also reviewed her job description thoroughly and reached out to her new manager via email to see if there's anything she could do to prepare for the first day.

While driving to work on the first day Carly ran into construction and had to find a new route to work. Once she arrived at ABC Company she wasn't sure where to park. This resulted in further delay and Carly arrived 30 minutes late. This meant that she was late to her first meeting with her new manager.

After a couple weeks of attending meetings and getting to know her colleagues, Carly scheduled one-on-ones with every member of her team so that she could learn about who they are, what they do, and the challenges they're facing in their current position. For the next one to two months and after getting to know her colleagues and learning about the team's and organization's problems Carly begins to make sweeping changes to roles, responsibilities, projects, timelines and the overall operations of the department. Most of the team has been on staff for many years. Even though this approach could meet resistance Carly pushes forward with her plans anyway.

Three months into her new position and in her "First 90 Days" presentation to leadership Carly highlights the successes the company has had and also points to areas that she has found where the organization could improve and become even more successful. She wraps her presentation by identifying areas that she needs training and emphasizes how much she is enjoying her new position.
