Case Study: Two students are discussing environmentalists' claims that trade harms the environment, citing fuel consumption to ship products around the world when the products could be sourced locally, (albeit at a higher price), increased use of materials for packaging, higher levels of pollution in countries with lower environmental standards, etc... One student comments, "Sure, there may be some negative impact, but that's a small price to pay for a higher standard of living. And, by the way, western countries did a lot of damage to the environment in the early days of industrialization." The other student agrees and adds, "Yeah, we should not be imposing our higher standards on the developing economies, otherwise, they cannot develop. A bit of harm in the short term is worth it to let those economies develop. Plus, those tree-huggers are always exaggerating the impact anyway."
