Question: (1) Given the diversity of experience and opinion in the United States, what accounts for the social stability of the system? How might we explain recent rises in disorder and disagreement?
(2) 4-7 single-spaced pages (NOT including references), times new roman (or a similar font), 12pt font, 1-inch margins
(3) Pick one prompt to answer (or you can come up with your own in consultation with me)
(4) Synthesize the theories of at least THREE theorists (at least two of which should come from the second half of the semester, i.e. from Weeks 9-16); Your analysis of the three theorists should comprise the majority of your essay! Remember that this is an assessment assignment, which means that your essay is meant to demonstrate to mean your understanding of the material.
(5) Should explicitly reference and cite primary sources & secondary sources from the course. You can use outside sources but they must be academic, peer-reviewed sources and should comprise less than 20% of the overall sources you use. At least 80% should be from our course material.
Intro paragraph: should present a thesis statement/argument that answers the prompt
Body of essay: should provide evidence--direct quotes from primary and secondary material as well as concrete examples--to support your main thesis/argument. Your first couple body paragraphs should provide "background" information about each theory to provide a basis for more detailed analysis in later paragraphs. Each paragraph should build off of the next. Think about the body of your essay as a logical progression of ideas. Think about what you need to talk about and explain first--e.g. explain how each theorist conceptualizes of the "self"--to be able to elaborate on your argument--e.g. how the self is socially constructed. You should make sure to define concepts as you use them and cite where in the reading the theorist/author discusses those concepts. (if your essay is well organized and has a logical progression of ideas, you should be able to explain each paragraph in a few words [though you won't do this in the essay but as an exercise for yourself], e.g. p1: main argument; p2: Mead's definition of the self, p3: Goffman's definition of self, p4: how they differ; p5: self development in childhood; p6: vs. self development through presentation, etc.)
