Problem: The physiological adaptations of a frog are very different from that of seals even though both can stay under for a long time. Seals expel all the air from their lungs when they dive and therefore have effectively no O2 uptake from the lungs for the duration of the dive. Although their skeletal muscles remain active they generally do not become anaerobic during the dive. Despite the continued demand for O2 while diving, the heart rate becomes very slow (a response called diving bradycardia). What accounts for the adequate maintenance of O2 supply to tissues despite the low heart rate? Consider both the O2 demand of and the potential O2 sources available to the different tissues. List one mechanism and briefly explain.
