Case Study: ASSESSMENT DESCRIPTION: Modifying the Management Approach Jack Henry, originally from Perth, Australia, had a successful career as a manager in the United States, working for a huge multinational firm. As a result of his achievements while working for the company, he was given the opportunity to work for the company's branch in Singapore. Upon his arrival, he immediately convened a conference of his local managers and solicited their thoughts and recommendations for the formulation of a strategy for the future development of the business. He had always followed a participative model of leadership and was a firm believer in including his managers in the process of decision-making. He was perplexed and worried when his repeated attempts to contact the Singaporean managers were met with a silent wall. Jack was confident in his methods and management style because he had seen success with them in the United States. However, this approach did not appear to fit with Singaporean corporate culture. Jack knows he needs to improve his cultural competence if he is going to create relationships, acquire the respect of his local supervisors, and have a long-term impact on the company's growth and success in Singapore. Mr. Jack Henry has asked your team to write a business report in which you discuss the following topics:
1. The effect of culture on interactions between people of different backgrounds.
2. The origins of misunderstandings occur when people from different backgrounds try to communicate with one another.
3. The ways in which Singaporean and American or Australian values and norms differ
4. Jack needs to put effort into teaching his staff about Singaporean culture and customs. What he is supposed to do
5. What recommendations do you have for improving the organization's culture?
6. Write a brief reflective summary of what you have learned in this unit:
a) How has this unit helped you develop your communication abilities?
b) What academic skills and procedures have you learned and implemented?
c) How will you use the skills and knowledge you've gained in this course to manage a situation similar to Jack's in your workplace?
